The Oklahoma City Community Foundation trustees and staff offer our sincere condolences to the family of former Gov. George Nigh upon news of his passing.

Former Gov. George and Donna Nigh
A lifelong public servant, George Nigh began his service at the age of 22 when he served as the youngest member of the Oklahoma legislature. Less than 10 years later, he continued trend when he became the youngest elected lieutenant governor in state history at just 31. In 1978, he was elected to the first of two terms as governor where his love for the state of Oklahoma shone through his service.
As a teacher, Gov. Nigh was a powerful advocate for education, elevating programs in public schools, higher education and vocational-technical schools. He went on to serve as president of the University of Central Oklahoma and was inducted into the CareerTech Hall of Fame.
In 1963, Gov. Nigh met his wife of 61 years, Donna. The devoted couple quickly married and supported each other through all life’s challenges, finding the greatest joy in simply being together.
While serving as First Lady, Donna became a strong advocate for individuals with special needs. In 1985, a group of friends surprised her by creating the Donna Nigh Foundation, the first statewide foundation for the benefit of the developmentally disabled. The Nighs transferred the foundation to the Oklahoma City Community Foundation in 1997 and have been actively involved in the distribution of grants for more than 25 years, helping thousands of Oklahomans and their families.
Gov. Nigh died at home surrounded by his family on July 30, 2025, at the age of 98. A public memorial will be held at 11 a.m. on Aug. 14 at Crossings Community Church.
