Donor Spotlight: Judge Eugene and Doli Mathews

October 2025

Judge Eugene Mathews was a judge with the Oklahoma District Court where he served until his retirement in 1999. Throughout his career as a practicing attorney, Judge Mathews had a strong sense and passion for social justice. He and his wife Doli were both active in the civil rights movement in the 1960s and remained committed to those causes that helped those who suffered discrimination or injustice. Eugene and Doli raised five daughters, and, during the turbulent era of the 1960’s both he and his daughters participated in the civil rights marches. In addition, he represented people arrested for participating in the sit-ins at the historic Cravens Building located in Oklahoma City, as well as being conscientious objectors.

Because of the work he did, Judge Mathews was recognized as the Outstanding State Trial Judge in Public Service, and he received the Clara Luper Service Appreciation and Achievement Award.

In 1999 the couple established a permanent endowment fund for the benefit of Legal Aid Services of Oklahoma, a nonprofit law firm that assists low-income individuals and seniors who are facing civil legal problems. Judge Mathews passed away in 2005.

Doli Mathews established her own advised fund in 2014 with the Oklahoma City Community Foundation. She felt the Community Foundation offered the perfect vehicle which allowed her to make grants to various charitable organizations that she cared so passionately about. She added, “It’s caring, efficient and yet transparent and is a model of what can be done when individuals and the community work together. I’m proud to be part of this”.

Swearing in ceremonies were a family affair for new Ward 2 councilman Eugene Mathews who with his wife second from left, showed off city hall to daughters, from left, Patrice, Janice, Mary, Julie and Gena standing.

Victory smiles are apparent as Gene Mathews with his arm around his wife, is surrounded by well wishers following his election as Ward 2 councilman defeating John Moran.
