Christmas Arrives Early for Area Mobile Meals Providers

The Pendergraffs in the kitchenJust in time for the holidays, the Trustees of the Oklahoma City Community Foundation recently awarded $21,550 in grants to 62 churches who provide meals to home-bound elderly through Mobile Meals of Oklahoma County. The grants will be used to offset the cost of food and transportation.

“Mobile Meals is a vital service for home-bound elderly in our community and we truly appreciate the commitment from these churches and their congregations to support the program,” says Nancy B. Anthony, executive director, Oklahoma City Community Foundation. “In addition to providing warm meals, the personal contact by caring volunteers is also very important to many of the seniors served through the program.”

“These grants came at a very good time,” says Carolyn Rosnick, Mobile Meals project coordinator. “This is such a wonderful thing to happen and is very much needed with today’s economy.”

Together, the 62 churches receiving the grants serve more than 2,000 seniors in Oklahoma County through their Mobile Meals programs, which provide anywhere from one to five meals each week per recipient. The grant amounts range from $200 to $1,000, based on the number of meals provided by each site. “We know the value of the service these churches provide is far greater than the grant, but the Trustees wanted to express their appreciation and encourage the ongoing support Mobile Meals provides to the elderly in the county,” Anthony adds.

This is the second consecutive year we have made a grant to Mobile Meals of Oklahoma County through the Elderly Services Field of Interest Fund, which represents a number of endowments created by donors to support services for senior citizens.
