Fourteen high school seniors from the Lawton area were awarded a total of $25,500 in scholarships at the annual Lawton Community Foundation’s scholarship breakfast on April 29 at Cameron University. The scholarship winners were from Lawton, Duncan, Frederick, Cache, Elgin and Altus school districts and the featured speaker was Warren Martin, executive director of the General Tommy Franks Leadership Institute and Museum in Hobart, Okla.
The Lawton Community Foundation presented 11 students with a one-time $1,500 scholarship and the Lawton Noon Lions Club presented one student with a $1,500 per year scholarship for four years. Recipients of the Community Foundation and Frank Curran Memorial/Lawton Noon Lions Club scholarships are selected by the Lawton Community Foundation’s scholarship committee with assistance from high school guidance counselors and a committee at each high school.
The Benny McReynolds Memorial Scholarship was awarded to one student. The scholarship is a one-time $2,000 award established at the Oklahoma City Community Foundation in 2010 and benefits graduating seniors from Frederick High School. Mr. McReynolds, a 1975 graduate of Frederick High School, left a bequest in his estate to establish the scholarship fund.
The Lamont N. Wilson ROTC Scholarship was also awarded to one student. The scholarship is a one-time $1,000 award established in 2010 by an anonymous donor to honor 2003 Eisenhower High School graduate Lamont N. Wilson, who enlisted in the U.S. Marines following graduation and was killed in combat while serving in Iraq in 2004. The scholarship is awarded annually to an ROTC student graduating from Lamont’s alma mater.
Since the launch of the Lawton Community Foundation’s scholarship program in 2001, close to $200,000 in scholarship funds have been awarded to students in the Lawton area. The Lawton Noon Lions Club joined the program in 2004 by establishing a permanent scholarship endowment fund with the Lawton Community Foundation.
