The United Way of Southwest Oklahoma has received a total of $7,000 in Community Grants from the Lawton Community Foundation for the past two consecutive years to support their Success by 6 program. The educational initiative promotes reading among children age 6 and younger to ensure they are ready to succeed when they start school.

Nonprofit organizations from Lawton and the surrounding area are invited to apply for grants from the Lawton Community Foundation. Grants will be awarded through two programs to qualified charitable organizations serving southwest Oklahoma. The deadline to submit applications is July 3, 2017.

Community Grants of up to $5,000 each are available for projects designed to improve the quality of life and provide opportunities for a broad range of Lawton area citizens. Qualified nonprofit organizations, as well as state and local government entities, are eligible to apply. In 2016, nine charitable organizations were awarded $32,875 in Community Grants.

Matching Grants will also be awarded to charitable organizations with endowment funds at the Lawton Community Foundation, or those interested in establishing an endowment fund. Eligible organizations must provide programs primarily benefiting southwest Oklahoma. Applying organizations are required to raise $5,000 to receive a matching grant between $2,500 and $5,000. In 2016, 13 nonprofits were awarded $41,600 in Matching Grants.

“Our aim with these programs is to meet the changing needs of the Lawton community,” said George Bridges, president of the Lawton Community Foundation Board of Trustees. “We also want to stress the importance of stabilizing future support of nonprofits by building endowment funds. The Lawton Community Foundation is pleased to support both initiatives through these grant opportunities.”

All grant applications must be submitted online by July 3, 2017. Visit for grant guidelines. Interested organizations may gain access to the online grant applications by emailing a brief explanation of your project to Jennifer Stewart.

The request for the link to the online application must be submitted no later than June 29, 2017. Any requests after that time will not be considered.

Inspiring Hope Throughout Our Community

Maya Angelou once said, ”One must know not just how to accept a gift, but with what grace to share it.” Angelou’s mighty pen was a light of hope for many Americans in a dark and challenging time. Hope to hold on, to keep going because though times seemed dark and the road seemed long, they weren’t alone.

The 2016 Annual Report of the Lawton Community Foundation recognizes our community’s generous donors and highlights the collective impact we’ve made during the fiscal year that ended June 30, 2016. But it also shares the stories that inspire us to believe that the community we live in is unlike any other. Generous donors have gracefully shared what they have been given to secure long-term support for charities serving our community.

As you read the 2016 Annual Report, I hope you will be reminded of the kindness that unites our community. It is because of donors like you who want to enhance the quality of life for others that the Lawton Community Foundation exists. Just as Angelou’s words held promise for the future, your support of this foundation ensures a better tomorrow for Lawton-area residents who are in need of a ray of hope.
